Old school USED to be that 2nd gap was smaller, new thinking is that this contributes to ring flutter as anything that leaks past #1 ring then gets trapped between the rings so now it's 2nd bigger so it can vent.

Not really, it comes off the machine like glass I then Lap it with Diamond paste and that gives the Dull Grey finish pictured, there should be 0 sign of pitting in the deck surface once cut even if that means using a thicker MHG to compensate for the material removed.

The Rings nip up and scour ALL lube from the cylinder wall and make a localised hot spot then the piston galls and tries to weld itself to the bore but can't so you get the uglies :(
