The 89+ uses some different braces to support the raised center section. I can't be any more specific though. I don't know the exact details, but it comes up often enough for people who swap a 89+ bumper onto their pre89.

It's the transmission equivalent of "You've got mail!" There are error codes which you need to check to find out about whatever problem(s) has been detected:

Are you sure the VSV is good? I presume you know the wiring harness is jacked because it's not supplying 12v when the engine's warmed up and the A/C is off?
There's an IDL switch in the AFM and one in the TPS, testing is covered in the test routine in the TSRM.
EDIT: Allow me to correct and specify that the AFM has the FC switch, trouble with that will cause the fuel pump to cut out.
