really really sorry I just assumed you were pacing the wifes car for speed to compare them....
If you heat an aluminium head to around 300c and cool it a few times it becomes soft (annealed) once this happens it MAJOR $$$ to strip it and reheattreat it :(
The second you see the temp rise pull over let it cool a bit so it's safe to pull the rad cap START the motor and add coolant while...
In the late 80's I had a job as a fabricator on a race team and while it was "fun" and the "bigtime" it totally removed any enjoyment I had working on my own cars!
Best thing I ever did was to work for myself in an unrelated indusrty so cars became a fun hobby again! (till I started on my Mk3) ;)

(they're actually good quality bolts and as long as they haven't been pulled down to 100 in the past they shouldn't fail)

In the old days is was a decomp plate and 2 stock head gaskets as fuel and ignition control wasn't as sophisticated!
Going for a thicker HG isn't the optimal fix as you lose the Quench/Squish effect so may not achieve the same HP...
