When I said "retarded" I wasn't talking about you ;)!
I meant sometimes with our motors the outer ring on the balancer can slip around so when you set the Ignition timing you think it's correct but it isn't and this would explain why his motor runs hot and has no balls.
The Key is a semi circular piece of Steel and the Keyway is the Groove it sites in and another on the inside of the balancer to stop it spinning.
Usually if the balancer has been run loose it shags out these parts allowing it to move.

Hells: Not 100% on this but I believe using an Auto ECU with a Manual is no problem at all! (I don't use a stock ECU so never really bothered to learn much about them)
Hells: Live with the Auto for this Summer and swap in the manual over Winter! ;) ("Simple" things with Supra's tend to take much longer for some reason and no way do you want to be without it all Summer)
A small amount of play is normal and while I've never pulled a 154 down the W58's have a bad habit of wearing through the case hardening on the nose of the main shaft and this shows up as excessive play in the input shaft and a grumbly trans in neutral at idle.....
