Could be turbo seals. You can't just replace them. The unit would have to be rebuilt.
Some times turbo seals smoke at idle, some times they don't. Some times they only show up under boost.
Check to make sure you have your pcv system hooked up correctly and also check to make sure...
You're looking in the wrong place.
There was a supra over in Holland IIRC that was running a hx50 making massive power.
Also, look at the Ford 2.3 ltr guys for more info. They LOVE the hx35,40 and the hy35.
Reaper: Read my post up top. This is why most people dont use them. Also, there is still the myth that a diesel turbo won't work on a gas engine. NEWS FLASH. 90% of all turbos on cars today started off as a diesel design.
Cheers.
BTW, Id be happy to help any body going Holset with any...

Not sure Kyle. Sounds fishy. Im pretty sure the black car has all "actual" 550's.
IIRC its one of thsoe deals that you can run low/high on a low system, but not low / high on a high system.
Eh, its late I hope that made sence.
That rear housing is a diesel design that uses a down pipe that bolts to the exhaust manifold or the exhaust housing of the turbo. It uses a gasket of sorts to seal the DP to the turbo.
The best "fix" is as stated - get a DP flange and have it welded in.
Also, when you get down to getting the metal to shine...
-Use baking soda and water to etch the surface or "cut" the surface
-Use semi chrome paste pollish to bring the surface to a shine
