In my Miata, I had an occasional clunk in the rear. Turns out, it was the spare tire wasn't bolted to the floor enough, so it would shift just slightly when turning with enough force. As Old Radar says, check for stuff moving that shouldn't!

Unfortunately, my clunk is not from loose items in the hatch area. It's definitely in the drivetrain. I will get into it more once the weather warms up again.
Some other options might be broken subframe where the diff is attached, and/or loose subframe mounts
