Ways to cure 7M oiling issues

No, a smaller cooler will not function the same as a T-stat. You could exceed the thermal capacity of the cooler and the oil get too hot...that is worse. Like IJ said, to run a T-stat you have to go to a full flow cooler set-up.

    Um, yeah. tap, tap?

Hey Rich - Just wanted to let you know my opinion pretty much mirrors what JJ had to say about oil. RP is over priced for what it is and Pennzoil Platinum is the Group III oil that is changing my view as well concerning syn oils...it is very good. Just had a thread on this subject...

Im Thinking Of Switching Oils And Weights

Read the stickys in this section and read this link...all of it: http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/ Then read the other threads in this section ;) Royal Purple is one of the oils discussed...as are filters. You're talking about Shell Helix Ultra...very expensive oil. Way out of my price...

Ways to cure 7M oiling issues

You will delay getting the oil up to ops temp, keeping it thicker than what you want. The bearings w/ stock clearances are designed to operate at a viscosity of ~10-11 cst. You want to reach this viscosity by getting the oil to 100 deg C as quickly as possible...that is the purpose of a...

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

Ok...so you made me dig ;) Following the links you provided, I registered on DuPont's site to gain access to their application guide and chemical resistance data. You are correct, Viton Extreme TBR is used in automotive applications...nothing specific concerning MHG's. Viton Extreme ETP is...

Your favorite motor oil and why.

You can, but use the "Green" GC by itself if you have enough. I'll be surprised if you find any of the green at all ;) If you do, buy all of it! That is because the Green GC is very old stock. Hopefully all of them said "Made in Germany" on the back like the above pics show ;)...

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

Like JJ said, Viton is a Dupont trade name...all MHG's use some type of fluorocarbon elastomer to effect the initial seal.

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

So what's the point of the Viton Aaron? If you're going to use the copper spray, clean the Viton off the MHG...what I can't figure out is why you would want a chemical "goo" as the seal for your HG. You're defeating the purpose of the Viton, and yes, that can very easily cause problems with...

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

Or by reading the back of the can ;) Like the can of Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket I'm holding in my hand right now: Of course JJ, I suppose other folks "experience" will prove this as incorrect as well...the spray can't possibly contain anything that will attack fluorocarbon based...

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

^^^ This is true...it doesn't work. Prep for a MHG is key...or use a stock composite HG. You can spray that all you want.

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

Aaron - I don't have to prove anything. DuPont specifically states acetone and ethyl acetate (both in contained copper spray) attacks Viton and causes it to swell. This is a fact, regardless of what your experience is, chemistry does not lie and it repeats it's effect consistently. The effect...

Chip in the head near coolant passage.

I would never use a copper spray sealant on a new MHG...you might want to read this: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29335 Using it would be a good way to ensure it doesn't seal ;)

Probe Forged Pistons: You want 'em? GB!

I agree with IJ John...we have plenty of options for race type pistons. A forged, lighter weight stock style is something you don't see.

    ECU temp sensor need advice

LOL...that's a getto rig if I ever saw one. Let me get this straight...you're going to have two ECU coolant sensors. Switched to fool the ECU into staying in warm-up enrichment. Have you considered the effect this will have on timing advance? Did you even know the ECU controls advance based...

    ECU temp sensor need advice

Well, that should have nothing to do with it...it's OAT that can have an impact. In fact, you do not want to run the car hard cold...your oil, coolant, tranny fluid, LSD, etc all need to be up at ops temp before you get on it.

    ECU temp sensor need advice

^^^ HUH! :3d_frown: If you disconnect the ECU coolant temp sensor, it will illuminate the check engine light and will maintain injector volume as if the coolant temp is 80 deg C (176 deg F - default temp). Cold, this will cause a lean idle. After warm-up the engine will run...

Your favorite motor oil and why.

Did you read this part? I'm wondering what statistics they are referring to....what owners actually buy to use? If that's the case, it doesn't hold any weight...it's a popularity contest. I looked at the GTX High Mileage 5W-30...
