on mine it was the tank. there is a screen insdie the tank, and mine was super dirty, so the pump couldnt suck fluid from the tank.

they use to back in the day. the FWD cars have the original small threads, where the RWD cars had a bigger shift lever. im guessing they may have used a thicker shifter to handle hard shifting, but i could be dead wrong.
