Second, that means exhaust gasses are getting into your coolant, or your system needs to be burped, which could explain you over heating also.
Compression test, and the exhaust gas tester.
New oil as in the PO just changed it? Are you loosing coolant?
Make sure the engine is cold. Valve is closed, that is on the base circle of the camshaft. Yes use feeler gauges. Make sure you have slight drag or the feeler gauge, you'll get the "feel". Yes the cam HAS to be bolted in, that is the clearance your looking for, between the cam and shim.
