He read the cuts, it's not hard if you know how many levels there are for a specific blank and have a working key or lock to go off of. It results in a truer cut than just copying a key with a guide.

The copper gaskets for each side of the banjo bolt? They're very cheap, even at my local dealer. A few of the auto parts stores around me stock them in many sizes, you just need to take in the banjo bolt and they'll find the right one.
