Last i remember when you have no ac you always have 51. It was like that on my old na at least and that engine ran perfect always. As long as the afc is connected in the right spots your fine. Older newer doesnt matter. If there is no shorts or opens in the wiring then your wiring is fine.

Alt supplies the car with the voltage it needs to stay running while continuously charging the battery. Battery is only there for start up. When the alt dies your car will use the battery and then shut off after about 15-30min when the battery is done.
