Tps will not set a code when its off only if it bad sometimes.
Cold start will only effect starting not idleing.
Hows the throttle screw on the linkage like where you put thickness gauge to set the tps?
When you start should only go to like 1300 and after few seconds start coming down...
Kinda depends. Buddy has early 89 plugs are gray tho and the yellow harness plugged in but the headlights were always on. Has to be yellow with yellow and the right year gray with gray.

I dont think its unheard of at all. Just not common. It has a machined surface so theres a machine to machine it. Would just to machine the back step on fly wheel for what was taken off.

Let it run with cap off?
Maybe try running it with cap on and loosen slowly and carefully as hose thats near the top see if air or water comes out.
Should be pretty standard.
You need to put tension on it, the turn over by hand 1 complete revolution so the cam marks are pointing up. After that you should have equal tension in both places and it shouldnt jump a tooth when you start it.
