Rebuilding one that's already blown gets expensive (gears, clutches, bearings, seals) and break-in of the gears has to be done correctly...

That's EXTREMELY rare as the center section of the turbo would have to be cracked for something like that to happen.
Not saying it doesn't happen, but it's RARE and BHG is usually more likely...
Quick test to that would be to look the coolant lines to the turbo and see if it happens...
