If your head and block are flat, and you are using an OEM style composite gasket, yes, you bought the wrong stuff. You should have just bought a six pack of beer.
Nitrous setups have been designed just for spool. A small hit that leans out the motor early, but shuts down the spray as RPM increases.
Air itself isn't such a good idea, as it will cool the exhaust too soon. The hot gasses expanding is what drives the turbine.
