The problem could be the seat of the pants feel. A 7MGTE without a working turbo, aka, before boost, is not a powerful engine.
Your compression indicates decent engine health, and I would not think that engine timing is off, but it wouldn't hurt to check it anyway.

Anyway, there are many 7MGE Cressida's if you didn't notice. Problem is, they are still on the road. They never die if you don't destroy them. You might be able to find a crashed one.
When you push in the clutch pedal, you are diengaging the clutch. To engage the clutch, you release the pedal. I say this because I want to be sure when your problem happens.

Just think, with my A340E and 3.73 I am at about 2400 RPM indicated at 70.
The automatic will not make as much "boost" as a manual in stock form. The torque converter is a fluid coupling, and as such, has slippage.
So yes, the automatic car will not be loaded as much.
