If you hit directly around the studs you risk deforming the metal making it that much harder to remove it. I used a 5lb sledge and beat on the elbow itself as you're trying to shock it loose.

Heat around the studs and beat on it. Doesn't really matter HOW you beat on it as you're trying to break up the rust.
