Ignore rotating the engine Bob. The only time the "test" is valid is with the piston at TDC on the compression stroke so the valves are closed.

If it's venting to atmo you're losing metered air that the ECU has already added fuel for. This will upset the mixtures.

It depends if the piston is at TDC or not, if it's slightly off there's enough force to act on the conrod as a lever and send it down but at true TDC the force has 0 leverage so will stay put. Could you hear any hiss in #5 plughole? Your non PCV system would have made it smoke like a bitch...

Were the plugs out in the other cylinders?
