If it's same as above they can be difficult to get to lock up, I had one.
If it's a stock shifter that's been shortened my earlier advice holds.
Stock they're bonded, a lot of people cutNweld them to shorten the shifter, this destroys the Bond and it spins, another "mod" is they remove that section and weld the threaded part to what's left making it short but this can vibrate/buzz like a bitch at highway speeds...

OP: The issue with a 7M and sleeves is they're a siamese bore engine meaning 1>6 are all interconnected, the bore spacing is tight so there's not a lot connecting each hole, when you sleeve an engine you overbore it by a large amount then slide a...
I glue the washers into the Head with a dab of grease on each on then lower it over the studs as guides, no chance of screwing the poooch that way esp if you've recycled a MHG with Copper spray...

(It's all for...
I use Grease and a shaft that's a close fit to the ID of the bearing, slide hammer is good but if the bearing's been in there awhile you run the risk of pulling the inside race out then the job becomes a major PITA...
Gen IV LS Chev, an L98.
You could pick up a cheap late model engine/trans and with minor work have your power and tweak it for economy.
I was running BIG injectors in mine and still got great mileage.
