NA-T can handle whatever you build it for, or have the fuel for.
The limitations on the NA for how much boost it can handle are that the pistons are higher compression (9.2:1 instead of 8.4:1) -- I don't know that this is that big a deal, and since the pistons that I'm putting in my GTE are 9:1...
No.
If you have an '86.5-89 NA chassis, you can use an '87-'89 GTE harness. There may be some small things, but they'll at least plug in and it will work.
If you have a '90-'92 NA chassis, you need a '90-'92 GTE harness for it to plug in directly.
The harness can be fit to different years of...
'89 is a special case. The plugs are grey, but they're the same as the earlier yellow ones in shape. You'll need a '90-'92 harness and ECU for that. It may involve changing out sensors on the engine as well. For later years, the knock sensors were different. I've got an '87 engine, harness and...
'89 is its own special case. It's grey plug, but the plugs from newer '90+ things don't fit. The yellow plug stuff from '87 and '88 does fit. So if you got a grey-plug '90-'92 ECU/harness, it won't fit, but a yellow plug one will, with a few caveats.
I have a 1989 NA. It's got a 1987 7M-GTE in...
I've seen many people do that, and I personally don't like it. I don't like how the surround bulges around the edges of it, and impinges on the climate control. I don't like how there's a gap at either side of the display.
I will say that the gauge face in the cigarette lighter location is...
No.
I've spent about the amount of money that I'd have spent to get the 2JZ-GTE engine on the 7M I'm putting together. That would have left me with zero budget for rebuilding the 2JZ, which I'd want to do before I'd want to crank up the power, even to the levels that I want from my 7M, so much...
I hurt my credit card a little. :D
Bought some stuff for my new engine build, in a typical example of "throw money at the problem" though I don't believe that I was throwing money away.
Local buy: Apexi AVC-R. Finally going to retire my $6 Home Depot boost controller. The MBC has done me well...
As a rule, if you can't afford to maintain the 7M properly, then you can't afford a proper swap.
Another engine might put up with more abuse, but it'll still break if you don't take care of it.
Unless you mean the button on the dashboard (not the steering column) to the inside of the hazard switch. In that case, it's the headlight washers. This is only active if the headlights are up.
I walked in to the Toyota dealership, and bought a single DIN pocket for a '9x Corolla. Cost me all of $5.75 I put that under my single DIN stereo and haven't looked back.
Personally, I don't think that 7M is a "downside"
Fixing the 7M isn't hard, and if it hasn't been run for a long time with a leaking head gasket, the risk of rod knock is fairly low. The 7M is a good motor. The question becomes what kind of fix do you want to do?
Just replacing the head gasket...
I beg to differ, and bottles need somewhere to sit, too.
The main use that mine actually gets is for coffee. Hot coffee doesn't come in bottles, nor am I interested in trying to pour my coffee into a bottle. If I had that kind of time, I wouldn't need to drink it in the car.
I paid $200 for mine, didn't know it was rod knocking, but it certainly had been.
In this case though it was a newer block casting (Which a 90 should be) and a 6M crank (Which a 90 should not be) which had never had the block or head resurfaced, and was fairly complete, though partly...
I have a Koyo and I love it.
The only thing to remember there is that for a 7M you'll need a plug for the temp sensor location used for the 1JZ hydrofan. Some people have used a 3/8" NPT plug, but that's not it, it's a metric 16mm thread. I don't remember off hand if it's a 1.25mm or 1.5mm...
Pre '89 didn't have them.
'89 they put them in the center console.
When the A70 got airbags, the controller for the airbags went under the center console, so it got shallower.
The one that I was talking about you can see here
