Like the title says - I forgot to bring my laptop with all of my disassembly pictures and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to run the wiring through my doors. If anybody has a picture of a door sans door panel, please post.

Why mess around with the knightpager kit for the rear when adapting the mk4 rear brakes will cost you the price of the calipers and rotors, and another $100 for machining. If you have access to a machine shop, even better - the parts are extremely easy to make.
To answer your original...
steam cleaning (in solution for a couple days) should take off the majority of the crap. You will waste your time with mineral spirits/varsol/etc - it requires a lot of work to even get the oily residue free. Ultrasonic cleaning (if you have access) with a detergent solution (eg. alconox)...
Just polished....and not the best job at that - I just wanted to smooth them out and clean them up.
Now that I think about it, one of the arms was next-to-new (came off my parts car with the toyota sticker still attached)
The new hardware makes a big difference when putting the subframe...

On all of the suspension components I used two coats of the rust preventative paint, followed by two coats of chassis coat black. (all por-15) While I did completely sandblast each part before painting, I went with the rust preventative paint base layers as added protection.

I recommend a good sandblasting for those rear knuckles - and be prepared to spend some time on them...it takes a long, long time to get them clean...
