Hey Jeff, what's the highest current the fog relay can handle? I'd like brighter bulbs, but don't feel up to wiring in a relay up front just yet.

I think it said 100w when Iw as down there... Dot take my word. Im gonna go pick up a maybe 200watt relay at kragen when im pickin some stuff up this week

Ah, thanks! I forgot to look. But will the old stock wiring handle that much juice? I think you may be better off adding a relay up front. Just trigger it from the fogs' original + lead and route the power from the battery with nice, new and higher guage wire.

I was thinkin' of seeing if anyone local carries something like an 85W lamp I could use. So the stock fixtures use H3s?

Hey, has anyone pulled out the little metal diffuser which sits infront of the bulbs in the foglight housing?

One of mine broke loose and I've been wondering if just pulling both out will improve the lighting.... or just hose the light distribution?

HellsLegion if you have or ever get the time...can you do a write-up of your experience in wiring up the fogs? It would be a very big help for us pre89 guys. Just reading your posts gives me the motivation to try it for myself. The only thing I'm scared of is messing up the electrical system of my car. Help us please!
The year does not matter. On all cars you are changing the power source for the control side of the fog light relay from the headlight to the different 12V source. That is why you have to have the headlights on for the fog lights. The switch provides the ground path.
but don't feel up to wiring in a relay up front just yet.
There is already a relay. But the question of amperage is a good one.

I'm sure the relay could *probably* handle the power load, but I don't know that I care to trust such old wiring to handle it.... but then again the relay may be just as old as the car.

I tried doing this all day! For some reason it just didn't work...I was already getting nervous because I thought I would never see my foglights work again. I installed everything back to normal just like the way it was. Re-wiring fogs on pre89s are difficult compared to 89+. Never again.

Really? I found it VERY easy.... once I realized I was looking at the wrong relay. :3d_frown:

Rewiring it on Pre-89's is almost exactly the same as on 89+ cars, the only difference is where the switch is in the circuit.

I could rewire a pre-89 MK3 in about 15-25 minutes. Anyone that is considering rewiring anything needs to take a look at the wiring diagrams and understand what they are doing before they just start hooking up wires all over the place. At least that's my thought on the issue.

I will post wiring diagrams that show what needs to be done as well as pics, maybe tomorrow. I'll let you guys know. It's really NOT hard, and is probably one of the most simple things you can do on the car as far as electronics go. I fear for the rest of your modifications if you can't get this done properly. No offense, I'm just trying to look out for the Supras ;).

Also, those "caps" should NOT be used in your car, anywhere. Avoid them. You need to use quality crimps or soldering. Anyone that has done it with them I suggest you redo it. Please.

I heat shrinked mine, looks very clean, I suggested you guys do the same because it makes it look stock if you get diffrent colors.

For Pre-89:

1. Find the fog light relay, cut the white/green wire (pin 3) and ground it.
2. Find the fog light switch, cut the red/black wire (pin 4) and connect it to a switched +12VDC power source. See Note
[/i]

in step one, which end of of the white/green wire do u ground? the side going to the relay, or the side going into the dash?

thanks in advance

ok, thanks. i thought i had everything set up right when i had the dash side grounded, but the headlights and the fogs wouldn't go on at the saem time. however, the brights and the fogs did go on simultaneously. also, the fogs worked by themselves.

i'll try grounding the relay side.

for everybody else: http://gallery.sanitylapse.com/v/supra/displayimage.php?album=66&pos=0
unfortunately, this didnt help me very much.

I'd be careful with the dash side grounded. If it's connected to the same white/green that comes from the dimmer you risk burning out the dimmer. Depends on how the dimmer's made, apparently there are two different internal circuits for the pre89 dimmer.

Exactly which wires do you have connected where?
