Main Bearing Question

i heard people replace just bearings after having knock, as long as the car wasnt run very much after the knock started im sure it could last a few months easy if not a lot more. Ive seen people do it in other cars, dont know about the 7mge. Its worth a shot, id rather try it than sit around and not try it.

I have done it in a 240. It help and got it around until I got the other engine built.

Yep, the first day I heard the knock, I baby'd it home and turned it off immediately. It was barely starting to knock. The knock was very faint; but, I was pretty sure I knew what it was.

I finished replacing all the rod bearings tonight. The one that was knocking wasn't all that bad. It was bad enough to knock though!:naughty:

The mains looked good so I'm putting her back together and will fire her up this weekend. Barring any unforseens.

Then...the second engine is off to the machine shop. It won't be long now!!!:biglaugh:

Pat did this to my car before I got it. Runs fine, no knock whatsoever at 15PSI on a 62-1 daily. He said he tried it up to 18PSI on the dyno and it was still going strong. However, he also shut it down the second it started, and you said you didn't. Either way, being a Toyota, it might run knocking for a good while. I spun a bearing in my Celica, possibly broke a rod, still starts up and runs and drives (20W50 in winter... Sometimes it takes a while to start lol)

If you just need it to last a week or two, what you're doing could work. If you'd have parked it immediately, the odds would be more in your favor.

This thread got enough attention that I'll post my findings.

Judging from the condition of the bearings, my guess would be that it should be fine for a good while. Some folks feel differently. I guess we'll see though.

For the $40.00 a set of bearings cost put them in and have fun.

Yes you can rotate the mains around the crank but it isn't easy and in your case not worth it. Keep in mind that a rod knock does have adverse effects on the rod journal, often elongating them so that they aren't round any more.

Actually, I did this. Then when the second engine was ready, I turned up the boost on the first setup until it blew up. I wanted to know just how "terribly unreliable" the stock headgasket really was. The answer is, it's not very unreliable.

For those of who don't mind pulling an engine, it's not a big deal. I've done it often enough that I can pull one out and put the other one in on a weekend if a couple buddies help with the heavy bits.

Update: The pan and block are all clean and ready for 'goop' and re-assembly. This will be done tomorrow after work. I'll replace all applicable fluids and fire her up Saturday, maybe Sunday.

Unless something unforseen happens of course...like I forget to get my sockets and ratchet out of the pan before I bolt it back up! :naughty:

I would suggest using a tube of Toyota's black engine sealant for the oil pan and anything else that you don't want to leak. Toss the cork gasket.

Ok. Here's the update.

My friend and I got everything put back together today, primed the oil system, and then let her rip!

Crank...crank...crank...crank... And more crank...crank...crank...crank...

Cracked the FPR fitting and nothing! No fuel pressure! The car has been sitting in my garage for approximately 2-1/2 years.

The consensus is that the fuel pump has died. I don't know. Maybe the old/bad gas killed it.

Anyway...Walbro will be ordered and maybe some 550's!!

LOL... Yeah, right after I drained the tank of the old stinky bad gas, I put 5 gallons of new in.
