This whole thing reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend about two years ago...

Me: Putting a lot of pressure on those lugs, aren't ya?
Him: Yeah, I always make sure they're on well.
Me: How do you know they're on well?
Him: You tighten them until you hear the first "pop".
Me: Yup, when you're using a torque wrench!!!
Him: <grumbling, as i dragged his ass to the store to buy a torque wrench>

He found out two more things that day, the hub rings he'd been using were too small, and they're not supposed to be replaced every time the wheel comes off. That, luckily, was the "pop".

I'm gonna go with "yes" here. I feel that in your hands a torque wrench holds many positive possibilities. ;) I presume you don't have the money to afford a wheel coming off while you're on the freeway then? Hell, just pick up a cheap one for right now, it may not be dead on but 70 or 78lbs is a lot closer than 124lbs when the stud calls for 74. Look up the required torque rating in the owner's manual too.

holy crap... are you serious?

Things you need to buy:

1. A new lug nut.. obviously since half a stud is in your old one...
2. A new wheel stud.. NO you don't have to replace the entire hub...
3. (when you can afford it).. A torque wrench..

in fact you shouldn't be touching your wheels without a torque wrench.. AND you should retorque your wheels about 50-100 km after you've had to put your wheels back on.

So, since you don't have a torque wrench... install the new stud.. tighten up the bolts untill they are snug working in a criss cross pattern.. then drive STRAIGHT to a tire shop to get your wheels torqued... don't worry they won't charge you.

yea its not to bad to get a the old stud out and the new one in, took me about an hour and a half, my dad broke one when he over tighten... its a pretty simple ordeal, lift car, take tire off, take brake system parts off, use hammer and punch to take out old stud, this parts a little tricky, sliding in the new stud, you have to put it in at an angle. then you just torque down the stud with a lug nut and it should slip into place. just be carefully not to over torque again or you'll be in the same boat. then get that torque wrench when you can! if you want a decently price one with lifetime warrenty, they seriously will replace it if you break it! home depot sells the husky brand for about $70 good for 250ft lbs. or a 150ft lb for $60.

Or, to make life easier... borrow a torque wrench from a friend before you start replacing the new stud... only missing one stud is ok to dive on for a little bit, but take the car to a shop to get them to torque the wheels properly, because you don't want one of the remaining 3 to come off before you get a chance to borrow a wrench....

Dunno, have never even seen a thing like a torque wrench (neither my dad), and our cars still drive fine and no wheels have flown away....

You probably have 10 bucks in your pocket right now to buy this one. Regular 20, sale for 10. Just print it out and retail store will honor net price.

You may also need a 1/2-3/8 adapter.

^probibly the worst suggestion i've seen.

do NOT buy a torque wrench from harbor freight.

unless your using it to beat some guy who caused your father to die at the track, and now your banned from the tracks for life.
