Hey guys,

As stated in the thread title, my key falls out WHILST THE CAR IS RUNNING...

Any ideas on why this is, and what we can do to fix it?

Cheers,

I'm suggesting a little bit of CK's advice and IJ's advice.

All seriousness, wouldn't that mean the tumblers are getting too worn?

You know, I was wondering how something on a downward angle "falls" up. LMAO.

I would start with a new key... if that doesn't do it, looks like you might need a new cylinder.

More often than not it's the wafers. If your locks are worn to this point I would recommend you rebuild the locks and get new code cut keys.

sounds like the tumblers are getting worn on the ignition. a new key might remedy the problem. hopefuly you don't have more than 4 keys on the Supra key ring, thats what makes them wear out so fast.

Mine did this, and I think it was caused by the cheap "Ilco" key that someone had cut for it in the past...it was much thinner than the original Toyota key, and I'm betting that it wore out a LOT faster.

Get a new key cut from the dealer...the new key blank cost me about $20, and the actual cutting was free... My key doesn't fall out or anything.

The biggest factors to wafers wearing down very quickly is how fast you insert or remove the keys. Making sure the cylinder is well lubed with some graphite will help. So quit banging your ignition like it's prom night and do like you b/f, g/f and/or spouse prefers and use some lube.

What CRE said. Fwiw every case I've seen of this a new key fixed it but it could be too late for some locks. Same with all the other little stuff that gets ignored. Door, hatch, and hood hinges, latches, power seat, steering column, ect. You have to be anal if you want things to last.

depends on the year as well...

pre-89's have s different key and tumbler design (same design as my 82 truck that had the keys fall out all the time)

my 89 doesn't have this issue...

It's pretty common on old toyotas...

If you can get it, buy a new lock set or see if they can rebuild your locks...

The remaining possibility if they were new all new is the key's cut order and the condition of cylinder housing.

Oh, and those of you jumping on the "she's-female-so-she-has-a-shitload-of crap-on-her-keys" bandwagon can go and jump... I have only 2 x car keys and 2 x house keys, THAT IS IT!!! The bf has more that double the weight on his than what i have on mine, so ner ner ner! :icon_razz :icon_razz :icon_razz

my car was broken into at one point before i bought it, so the cylinder's fucked up, and i can take the key out while driving, and if i accelerate quick enough, it'll fall out..

sucks, but kinda funny..
