ok... well tonight i was curious...

when us mighty fine afm based cars blow off ic piping the car burbles around and dies and generally in a very inconvenient place lol

sooooo i was thinking

is it possible to somehow have a map sensor still having output going to the ecu telling it how much air is in the system so it can adjust fuel accordingly to keep us going till we're somewhere convenient to fix it

now i know that the kv afm uses hz and as far as i know it's not convertible to voltage... the ecu is expecting input in the hz range not voltage?
and you can't have to inputs going to the ecu on the same afm wire, i'm sure this will either limp home or just plain confuse the hell out of it

does the ecu absolutely require the hz input or can we swap it somehow?

i have no idea if this is making any sense LOL

basically what i want to achieve is a way of keeping the car idling while getting somewhere to fix ic pipes

other than aftermarket ecu etc... can we do this with the stock system

i think the only major obstacle is the hz input to the ecu

if for example the hz input wasn't an obstacle i was thinking of maybe installing a separate air intake temp sensor, map sensor to the wires on the ecu and killing the wires at the afm.. but once again this is dependant on the hz signal

feel free to poke holes in my theories lol

convert your car with a MAFT, and put the sensor as close to the TB as possible. if any of your IC pipes blow off that are BEFORE the MAF then the car will still run normally.

LOL well that could also be a good investment :p
generally mine don't come off but i did have one little mishap on the motorway, not overly convenient... and there's not many yellow mk3 supra owners here in new zealand so consequently i got a million phone calls haha

Here's a evil tip. Works rather well, too.

First off, I clean both my pipes and the inside of the couplers until they are perfect, give my pipes a coat of spraypaint on the ends - then install the couplers while the paint is wet. Put it all together, screw down the clamps, and give the paint a day to dry.

Fire it up and away you go.

The only downside to this is that the couplers are now REALLY hard to get OFF. :)

Not really relivent, but on my N/A car, the elbow in the intake after the AFM and before the throttle body broke off when I first got the car. I stopped pushed it back on and had no problems. If I were to hit a pothole/speedbumb it would pop back off, but I didn't experiance any problems till I came to a complete stop and tried to start driving again. The problem was fixed the next day and the car has since been sold, I am just curious as to why the car didn't die right away?

sorry for the thread jack...

heh, what? you mean its probably easier to drive the car with an unplugged afm than with a malfunctioning afm?

i could have used that info months ago while i was trying to get home on the thruway! :icon_razz

Um, no. Without the AFM you can't get more than about 1400 rpm, and you can't use more than about 10% throttle. This will, however, allow you to limp to *somewhere* that you can fix it, in many cases.

Yep, in my experience, better than plugged in and reading zero.

I suppose it depends on how badly it's malfunctioning. :) I had to drive 4 miles to get home with no AFM once. It wasn't any fun.

I did make it, however, which is a testament to Toyota engineering in the first place.

Well, aren't similar pipes $450+ normally? I bet IJ could beat that, even with shipping. Well, I don't know how difficult they are to make, but still, IJ seems like a pretty handy dude. He probably makes them in his sleep, or farms them out to the welding gnomes so he can work on the important stuff, like front facing intake manifolds and atom smashers and flux capacitors.
