The ACIS' valving (as far as I could tell) is limited to the upper half of the intake manifold. The small channel (once I hosed all the crap out of it.... oil) seems to be clear of anything. I suspect it's just a feed for the ACIS and was cast in such a way that they had to leave part of it...
