whats the small pipe cast into the y-pipe, leading to something sticking into the center of the pipe and covered by a plate with 4 screws?

should i take it all out before dropping the y-pipe into the parts washer?

you're serious? i thought pic 3 was the cold start injector. pic 1, you can see the cover plate up top and the part in question right down the center at the divide. pic 2 shows a smaller pipe running on the bottom of the y-pipe.

you're right, i'm totally wrong. I didn't remember so many cover plates on n/a's. I don't have any idea what that is. sorry.
Edit: it's only 4 bolts hlding it in, why not take it out befoer putting that part into the washer? little bit of hand washing never hurt anyone. besides, i'm sure youre supra would appreciate some up close and personal love.

What's up Clip? Can't get it off? I couldn't get mine off either. I still have no idea what it's for. Jeff Lange told me he was pretty sure it's a part of the ACIS system, but he doesn't know if there's any valving in there or if it's just an empty space.

EDIT: I did clean mine out in a major way, I don't think there'd be any valving in there unless it's passive and if that were the case it's probably shot anyway.

salright, i'm stumped. the damn pipe runs all the way from the part in question under the cover to the entrance of the upper intake closest to the driver.

also, what position does the acis get installed in? its closed when started, but which way does it open?

budget, ive already got the upper intake cleaned out all nice. its not sparkly but itll sure breathe easier. got the lower intake soaking right now, it's cleaned up great. last two parts are the y-pipe and the throttle body.

ive been hesitant on taking off the TPS, how hard is it to recalibrate?

The ACIS' valving (as far as I could tell) is limited to the upper half of the intake manifold. The small channel (once I hosed all the crap out of it.... oil) seems to be clear of anything. I suspect it's just a feed for the ACIS and was cast in such a way that they had to leave part of it open, requiring a cap plate.

Sorry, I don't know which direction the ACIS opens, never went so far as removing the VSV.

OK....is everybody ready???????

The cover in question is part of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system.

Remove the bolts, then the cover, and clean it all out, cause it will be full of soft carbon crap. There is a gasket available, or just use a little sealer.

The way it all works is this........

The exhaust gasses come out of the head (inside, thru passages)at the #6 cylinder, pass thru the 'egr cooler' (which is actually just a hollow space under that cover on the back of the head, by the firewall), then on to the egr valve.

From the valve, the gasses pass thru a pipe to the intake manifold, then thru a passageway in the intake manifold, over to that little chamber under the cover with the 4 bolts. From there the gasses are allowed to flow into the intake manifold so that they can enter ALL 6 combustion chambers.

A properly operating EGR system will actually give you more HP's, and better MPG.

How, you ask???

By helping to control ignition pre-detonation (pinging), allowing you to run 87 octane fuel (cheapest), and with no pinging, the knock sensor won't tell the computer to retard the timing.

I've been running 15* timing for years, on 87 octane, with no problems. I get 17/22mpg.:biglaugh:
