    1st gear issues

I had that happen for a while and it was the white plastic 'cap' on the bottom of the shifter. Mine was gone and installing a new one along with a new shifter bushing cleared it right up. Your mileage on this may vary and it may only hold off the need to rebuild the tranny.

    Happy New Year

Don't blame you. I was off the roads by 3pm. Seeing a gray 05 Mustang suddenly light up like a blue christmas tree and pull someone over made me decide that even a pre-cocktail cruise was out of the question. I need to take sleep more seriously. My average is 5 hours. 8 some days 2 others.

    Second opinion, Magic diagnostic?

Codes? Black smoke would be way too much fuel. Leaky injectors, o2, or vac leak. Smoke from oil cap could be rings or clogged/incorrect pcv. I'd still do a compression check.

    Gasket Surface Prep

Just be sure to use the stock 'washers'. The rubber is to allow a small amount of flex so the 'tabs' don't break (learned my lesson the hard way... twice). And if the oil drain hose is that hard you may want to consider a new one in the near future. # 12263-42010 : ~$30 from Champion/Elmhurst...

    Gasket Surface Prep

Valve cover gasket surfaces do not need to be as perfect as head gasket surfaces. You can get away with just using a gasket scraper and making sure they're clean. Slight pitting won't make a difference. Also, is the oil in the plug galley between the valve covers? This will leak onto the...

Clutch Fan Removal/Mod good or bad?

The hp gain is minimal (.5-2hp range) and the stock setup cools better than 90% of the electric fans out there. If you want better cooling go with an upgraded radiator.

Suggestions while the head is off?

Figured I'd post an update now that I'm 1000+ miles on the new gasket. The 7M is running better than it has in years. Haven't lost a drop of oil or coolant yet and the pull to redline is amazing. Poodles hit the nail on the head. Nickel and dime was the name of the game. Minus the DM...

A small bag of hand tools (soldering iron/electrical tape/plumbers tape/wrenches/screwdrivers/spare wire/couple spare bulbs...), a basic socket set (8-17mm), 1-2 quarts of oil, and a jug of coolant. The tools sit neatly on the floor behind my seat and the fluids fit perfectly on the sides of...

    Yet another idle question

    car is dumping white smoke.

When I was looking at machine work local shops here were gonna charge around $450 for a complete head job (helicoil exhaust, change stem seals, grind valves/seats...). I ended up rebuilding it myself and just using a Toyota gasket, ARP studs, viton stem seals, Comp Cams springs, and the...
