yes, the ring gear bolts to it and it directly splines to the axels, its a solid piece of steel or aluminum, no way to unlock it. exactaly like welded spiders but its 1 piece and designed to take abuse.
yea everyone seems higher then me, i rarely go above 1200 when driving normall, its only when it really boosts that i break 1300. still highest to date is 1550 at about 12.(1-4):1 af
i did that while playing with my laptop, took the keys out, droped them on my passenger seat to play turn off the laptop got up locked the doors and closed it. problem was at the top of the window teres a channel the window sits in so u cant pull it out. had to call a locksmith, 60$. never do...
well if u welded the spiders together at the 4 spots on each side, then welded the gears to the case. id think ud be pretty safe. just turn the heat up on the welder so it really melts the cast iron together.
yea its from running rich due to a boost leak. i had the same problem but it wasnt a boost leak (tested it) it was just the factory computer runing 10.3 air fuels at 11 psi.
further more, y do u hone a cylinder when putting new rings in? so that they can break in properly, and the reason for that is becasue of those edges. same reason brake rotors are resurfaced, and calipers are honed when replaceing pistons seals.
the hone creates the wear surface on the easier...
the point i was getting at is break in of the rings for the most part is over within the first 1000 miles.
i dont entirely agree with that picture of after hone and before hone either. i agree that it breaks down the rough spots from boring, but it also creates edges, those are the sharp edges...
well the hone gives the cylinderwalls the 45 or 60 degree crosshatch, the cross hatch is then the small sharp ridges.
check out this link, he goes into more detail:

but the oil squirter im sure still sprays all over the walls, as well as the holes in the rods.
but then again not much else has to "break in" besides the rings. maybe the valve seats, or the valve train.
i never said the engine is fully broken in at 500-1000 miles, i said the rings are for...
i dont see how u would want to put pistons in a dry bore. y are tehre oil squirters and hole in the rods if oil on the cylindert walls are a bad thing.
and if there is still oil in the cylinder when i fire it up for the first time, within a matter of seconds it burnt away, i realy dont believe...
damn.... that was some serious informative post lol. i am thinkin that its my ignition bieng retarted 5 degrees causing the egts to be so hot. my air fuels are pretty consistent 11.8 to 12.1 so im pretty sure im good there, its just my egts at around 1550 thats really hot lol. but those temps...
well i searched around and didnt find much, im wondering what safe EGTS would be. i have my probe in the 5th runner of the stock manifold, runing a 11.9-12.1 air fuels i see temps as high as 1550. how hot is safe? btw my timing i believe is off, i think im only running 5 degrese instead of 10...
