The motor should be running if you're going to put cold water in it to lessen the chance of thermal shock!
(You run the risk of annealing the head each time you do this usua;;y on the exhaust side so it banana's when removed)

I've stripped down a pair of axles and to get the boots on and off you need to pull the inner CV joint off then remove the circlip on the end of the axle then the tri-bearing then finally the boots.
It's controlled by an aux channel in the ECU so I have full control of it and at the moment it's set to run when the coolant is >85c.
I give it credit for saving my motor on the 200km trip home with a BHG as it kept the remaining coolant circulating when the rad was getting low and gave me...
