Oh, I've seen them vanish entirely - the oil supply for the bearing gets plugged, the bearing runs dry, and the temp in the bearing rapidly gets hot enough to melt the (mostly) lead bearing completely away.

Back to the original topic - testing your stock BOV is easy, pull off one of the two big hoses and blow through it. If you can, it's dead. Another point though - a dead stock BOV will not cause compressor surge - it just makes it harder for the turbo to build boost.
