400 whp in a Mk2 chassis would be dead even with a Mk4 at ~500 whp, and will kick the snot out of pretty much anything you can buy off a lot that is mass produced. :D

Been in the same situation, and there's no nice way to deal with it, I'm afraid. Lots of poisons will cause that kind of thing - rat poison or insecticide will do this as well.

My guess would be a boost leak after the AFM, personally. :)

Keep in mind that all four options - the 7M-GTE, the 1J, the 2J, and the bastardized 1.5J, are capable of putting down far more power than your rear wheels can keep on the ground. Unless you are willing to tub the ass end of your car, anyhow, and that only helps if you want to go in a straight...

A 57 trim upgrade on the stock CT will get you to 400 rwhp easily. That's well under $1000 and bolts onto all the stock parts, because it's just an upgrade to the internals on your stock unit.

Oh - and here's another dirty trick. Girls can never find our door handles - so lean over and open the door after she fumbles around for it for a few seconds. :D
