Not all of the ECUs will throw a code when the O2 is malfunctioning. My Canadian 89 does, but I know several people who have not run into this.

Get it cleaned out and replace the plugs. I bet there is a bunch of oil and water down there, shorting one or more plug wires, and that will be the reason it's all choppy.
