is there a way i can hook an aftermarket water temp gauge up using a new sending unit and still tap the stock gauge into it?

yeah, a manual tranny in an NA is the w58, with its limit being around 300hp. youd have to get a new clutch pretty soon too. the turbo 5spd is the r154, and it'll hold a hell of a lot more than 300hp. i think there are people on here running 500-700 hp on the r154s.
