Yup, that sounds like the earlier "chrome" option centre caps. As far as I know they were the regular centre caps modified by a company in the US with the thin metal over top to match the wheels.

If you look into it, you'll find that generally speaking, your tires are heavier than your wheels. Getting larger lighter wheels and losing some rubber can really help with the weight.
