Agreed that if you can afford the down time, just do the head gasket and do all the other misc. maintenance with it. Change most the coolant hoses and such and clean everything real well.

Easy way to check the main components is to search though the EPC and see if they list separate parts for turbo/NA.

Who are you talking to? I would be in love with the PureONE filters if they had a grippy part. I used to always get the Fram filters simply for the grip, but then found out they don't filter anything short of small pebbles, lol.

I've never taken out that first part all the way, but it looks like the cold start injector to me. The second is the EGR system. It goes on the backside of the intake plenum. The TSRM will detail the process of putting both of those things back on. :)

VIN is stamped on the block on the lower driver's side towards the rear. Consult the TSRM for all VIN locations.

Nice! I loved working with Solidworks in my freshman class a few years back. It's easy to learn and actually is quite capable with all the extra add-ons. I'll be watching and waiting for the animated video... ;)
