Your key could be worn out...although that wouldn't cause your no-start problem...lol. So do you hear the starter relay click when you turn the key to try and start the car? You should hear a "click" sound coming from the passenger side footwell.

Did you try using a magnet to pick-up the metal bits? Maybe try a magnetic drain plug?
