Its not hard, just time consuming and you need to know what you're doing with wiring. Also, don't waste your time with a NA engine - go turbo. Same hastle but lots more fun.
You need to do a compression test and make sure the rings aren't shot. Also, check to make sure you aren't eating oil out of the valve covers into the intake.
Yes the chip inside our ecu's can not be reprogramed or burned.
Don't ever fall into the JET ecu trap either.
The only way to alter the maps is:
-SAFC or something of the like
-Standalone
-Mines ECU or equiv

Well if you replace the entire system with a 3" straight through exhaust, you'll notice a whole lot of power.
I have seen 40hp increase after a 3" downpipe and exhaust installed on a mk3.
