biggest things i know that you be needing are the following....
-phillips (different sizes and lenth)
-screw driver (^)
-engine lift
-rachet and wrench...1/2 inch should do you fine. you'll also be using sizes 10, 12 and 14 the most.
-jack and stands.
-pb blaster.

ok well your right sorry i forgot to put that one in. it is the exhaust manifold. and yes it is a t4 turbo.
i also just got done repairing a BHG. about 5k ago. i used oem head gasket and ARP studs at 85 fpt. im going balls out and setting my turbo at 20 psi. i just need it for a daily driver...
same think happened to me too. i knew my plugs were still good so today i got some NGK plug wires and that solved the problemo. it also gave me a better kick then before.
