    weekly car debate thread.

Considering how many GN's I've seen rip the strip at LVMS, and how many junked out T-birds I've seen throughout my lifetime, I gotta go with the Buick. Granted, I do remember an 80's T-bird that a customer of mine had when I was working at Blockbuster years ago. Thing had WELL over 400k on the...

1jz front turbo removal in car...

Well, both wastegates have plenty of resistance when trying to open them by hand. Tough to get much leverage on them though, given the cramped location... If one were bad (stuck closed), I would have a ton of boost pressure, correct? If one was open, it would boost rather lazily (over-stressing...

    VIN Etched into Windows??

All the broken glass I found in my driver side door indicated that mine had been haha... Hmm. Strangely, my driver side door (that was the side of the T-boning long before my time), you have to hold the handle up when you close the door to lock it, like the 87's. VIN number etched into the...

    Electric Fan: Gaugeing Intrests

From the link: "Are you a dealer? Discount Toyota Parts is operated and maintained by Champion Toyota of Austin . We are not a Lexus dealer, but we are able to offer you factory Lexus parts through our affiliations with Lexus dealers. We provide the same warranty on factory Lexus parts as your...

    Must-have tools for MK3 maintenance / repairs / upgrades?

Hmm... Top of my head, the ONLY bolts that I am aware of that are bigger than the 19mm stock wheel lug bolts are the crank bolt (not positive on this one), and the drain/fill bolts on the differential. For what it's worth... all of those can be reached easily by socket. :)

    mk3 4 a first car

Bet she doesn't drive it like I drive them. ;) I still remember getting my ass handed to me by Subaru WAGONS on GT2, and having no idea at the time, just what made them so quick. Always wanted one of those with a spiced up EJ variant... ---------- Post added at 12:23 PM ---------- Previous...

1jz front turbo removal in car...

Bingo, found that out after cursing the engineer who put the heat shield on these turbos... stupid thing. Anyway, thing was hooked up correctly, but it seems to be behaving a bit odd. Usually, it'll spool up hard around 2500 rpm, but lately it's been taking more like 3000+ to get the thing going...

    Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan

I have a Contour setup for my car sitting in my parts room right now. Haven't gotten around to test fitting it, but I'm thinking it might actually fit my setup, which is about as tight as it gets. Worst case scenario, I'll pull the PWR out, set it aside for now, and get a Koyo or some other...

    VIN Etched into Windows??

There are VIN stickers and etchings all over my car... that's part of the reason I found out that my door is from an 87 turbo. :p

    Must-have tools for MK3 maintenance / repairs / upgrades?

If you were to give me only 5 tools to work on the entire car, I'd probably request a 10, 12, 14mm ratchet wrenches, a sammich, and a drink. Not too many things can't be done with these tools. From the sounds of things, you have a pretty good selection as is. For maintenance reasons, I'd...

I believe someone stickied a "how to remove a 7m in ~47 steps" somewhere on here...

    Electric Fan: Gaugeing Intrests

I had a PWR (biggest rad you can get for our cars to my knowledge) and a 7m with stock fan and shroud. Fits just fine. Won't fit with JZ and clutch fan setup though...

    mk3 4 a first car

DSM: if your car isn't broke, YOU are. ;) I'd still lean toward Miata hardtop, for all the above reasons I've listed. They get decent mileage (geared pretty sporty though, so expect 28-30mpg, I got ~25mpg average, but mine also saw a LOT of redline and canyon driving), and they sound great if...

Another good option is the HKS Sport or Hi-Power Silent setup. Both nice and quiet. :)

Last I heard, you had actually managed to get yourself a 355 or something like that, did I hear wrong? Seems odd to come back to the Supra world after owning a Ferarri...

Why are stronger rod bolts required as horsepower is increased?

Thanks for the link, and good read all around. Never really thought about it, and reaffirms my thoughts that I want a mid-range monster rather than an engine I have to rev the ever-loving shit out of it. Granted, 72.5mm stroke is nice for piston speeds...

    lower temp thermostat replacement?

Hmm... if I were mounting an extinguisher in my car, it would probably be attached with a simple bracket onto the driver side of the cage hoop. Or perhaps along where the driver side frame rail under the door is, if it were small enough to not get in the way. I'd be worried about it moving...

    Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan

Ford makes some nice electric fan setups. I have a Contour setup that will be going in my car if it'll fit. If not I'm getting the Koyo radiator... I'd be surprised if the MkVIII and Taurus/Contour aren't the same fans with different shrouds.

    R12 System Recharge Options

So where do they hide all the magical cold-sauce if there's still plenty of it left? Not a big deal for me personally, I'm more a windows down kinda guy, and considering around here the heater is used WAY more than the AC... but I'm still curious. They haven't made R12 in what, like 15 years...
