Emilio's Rebuild & Improvement Build Thread

Yeah, the ABS diagnostic system on the older Toyota vehicles is kinda sketchy. If you need a new compressor I've got the one from my car. It was the only part that didn't strip when pulling the engine. You're also going to want to flush out the entire system, replace the receiver/drier, and...

Emilio's Rebuild & Improvement Build Thread

It was a custom one that I bought on the cheap because it was not finished (It's a plus for me, but bad for others). I'm having Sean finish up the welding and flattening the flange. All you really need for this style is a good condition upper intake, but my particular one takes advantage of my...

    Hose question

Do realize that there are 3 coolant lines under the intake, head-IACV, IACV-TB, TB-heater pipe. Is the cooling system filled yet? You might have bypassed the IACV coolant passage and hooked both lines up to the TB instead. Could also be a charcoal canister line too. That's all I can think of off...

Emilio's Rebuild & Improvement Build Thread

You never saw mine when Sean and I got my car running, but you can't get much more hackish than that. I was also using a universal intercooler without same-side inlet/outlets so that made it harder. But, if you're up to spending the money on a pre-built system, go for it. Less hassle and instant...

    How does this crank look?

Officially, I'd have it checked by a good machine shop, but the journals looks good to me. I'd just have them polished and install a new set of bearings! You will also want to clean up the rusty front snout section. That will make pulley install/removal very difficult in the future.

Why not just rock the test pipe? If you get in trouble, just be like "It's in the back, I just need to get it welded" lol ;)

Do I Hook Up Electric Fans?

Your cooling system will not operate properly. You need to circulate coolant at all times, even when it's not warmed up yet. That way the t-stat knows how hot the engine coolant it and opens up when operating temperature is reached. By blocking it off, you have eliminated flow through the engine...

Do I Hook Up Electric Fans?

That's no good, you need those two coolant lines to be connected, it's the t-stat bypass passage. Even if you turbo doesn't need it, you still need to run a hose in between those two points on the water neck. Edit: poodles beat me to it

Timing belt slapping lower timing cover

I think your belt is not tight enough. I haven't had that problem with my 7M, but it happens to 5s-FE Camry's all the time. Once the belt loses tension (stretching/loose tensioner) it slaps the timing belt cover around 2-4k rpm. Double-check to make sure you don't have slack in your belt!

Article: The great fuel filter myth.

Not that it's Toyota, but I pulled the fuel filter apart from my 1990 RX7 and it was full if crap! I can tell a (long) tale, but it was plugged and the whole fuel system was in trouble. New tank, pump, sock, flushed lines, filter and cleaned injectors fixed it, though!

    toyota pink coolant?

I vote stay away from Toyota Super Long Life "Pink" coolant. Pink seems to be harder on the seals in the cooling system, but that's my opinion. Stick with Toyota Red (Long Life) is what I would suggest. It's a bit more spendy, but it is a very good coolant. There are better coolant chemistries...

Is there any REAL advantage to a dual split downpipe?

Well, I think I'm actually going to try to contribute something useful to this community for once! I have an idea for this spring when my car is put together to test the validity of the divorced downpipe claims. I have a recirculated divorced downpipe on my car, and I am going with a LIPP boss...

    Leecheater's rebuild, getting there

Didn't you have the other T4 Manifold sent out to be ported or was there something wrong with it or it's clearance? Brake lines can be done the easy way or the factory way. Easy way involves a tee fitting and a coupler, but the correct (factory) way would need 3-5 new brake lines, brackets, and...

    Leecheater's rebuild, getting there

Ha ha, it's so true and so often overlooked. You'll have to take some pretty pictures for us all to envy your brakes :icon_razz I'm glad to see it's all coming together, though. Sirgeorgee- you'd love this car, even as it was this fall. Loads of power on tap and just a blast to ride in!

a/c vs. take the top off

I'm with 90turbo and Moy. After my r134a leaked out, I pulled my system out for a proper re-seal and retrofit, but most of the fittings stripped coming apart. I checked out the cost to repair it all and it was was crazy expensive so I said screw it. Like viper said, those compressors are...

    Replacing Valve Stem Seals

Yeah, this is a universal application tool, but I've found that it works great with Toyota's small valves from the little 1.3L 4E to the 5.7L 3UR and everything in between. It's no cake walk to do this on-car but do-able on your own. If you noticed, I had help from Dan's nephew Sean...
