Pete: Nah there's no physical connection between the Cable and the Needle, it has a magnetic coupling.
My "guess" is there's some sort of stop that the Needle is meant to rest against (been ages since I had one apart).
I do mine in sequence using 3 passes ending in 5lb's under the desired setting, I then run the car through 3>5 heat cycles and retorque +5lbs.
The idea with the 3 passes is so you're NOT bending the head at the bolt/stud you're pulling down.
Yes you can do it (NA's bound for hot climates had a version of the horrible GTE pressure based system installed stock)
Have a look at the GTE section there a few good write ups on how to do a full flow T Stat based system.
Snow: I don't run the TB port at all (don't have a stock TB)
I "would" run it if it were there but it's very low capacity due to it's restriction.
Using it and the Larger hoses/fittings to the accordian hose you could probably get away using -8 lines and fittings.
