In and out shafts are the same, you can machine the GE pistons if you have access to a lathe and you can also add more discs in the 2nd gear brake clutch buy substituting some thin plates in place of the stock thick ones.

Measure the snout on the crank and make sure it's not tapered (might have had a wobbly crank at some time in it's past)
Stock Damper is pretty useless at that HP level, even the off the shelf ATI isn't going to cut it for long you'd need one...
A lot of times when poeople torque the Pully bolt they use a tool in by a spoke to the timing case and causes a "cut along dotted line" stress riser :(

Seen a few of these that have exploded like that, quite often the slightest nick/mark on a spoke during assembly is enough to set it off as the pully is "sintered".

To answer the original question I'm assuming you have an 86.5 with a GTE swap?
If so you'll need either a GTE Tach or do a resistor mod to the 86.5 NA Tach to make it play nice with the Turbo ignition.
You really need the solenoid there as it will pull water through the nozzles when you close the throttle, I used 6x 110cc nozzles and made the distribution block myself so it wasn't all that exe, the lines and fittings were fairly cheap.
