When I built my TT Toyota V8 240z Datsun I built the firewall from 2mm thick Hi Tensile steel sheet with just this sort of failure in mind as I was using a home made Twin Plate ;)
Glad to read the injuries were only bruising as CK said it could have been so much worse!
There are some brass rivets that hold the layers in alignment, you have to remove them to clean ALL the viton off, I found a pair of wire cutters collapse the rivet nicely then you just pull what's left out, much safer than drilling.
Just a whole bunch pf things didn't work when I got it and there was no way to enable them in software as the firmware needed to be reflashed, once that was done a couple of things at that stage didn't work and a few promised features after a year of waiting hadn't happened.
ie: Narrow band...
An aftermarket FJ80 LandCruiser alt is 140a and all that's needed is a simple pully swap and there's an adaptor loom available to make it plugNplay.
(used one on my 7M)
Would all depend on how the software has matured, I had one of the original prerelease units and the software let it down badly to the point I gave up and returned it.
Shouldn't make a difference as there's only one Starter for the 7M (2 but other than threaded mounting holes they're identical)
Sounds more like the Bendix isn't throwing the gear out.
