Did a LOT of testing when I had the Fans hooked up to the MoTeC and found you needed a 5>8c run up if you were to have any hope of catching it before the temp ran away, also found in a Mk3 it's better to have them slowly moving at cruise so the car can run on the T Stat.

You end up with a bit of a funky shape tunnel doing it this way but all the load is on the caps so it doesn't actually effect anything as the cap profile ends up perfect.

The 3Bond 1207b I use could be run without bolts after it's cured...
Total PITA to get a steel pan off, Bio's method will work if you have a helper to hold the wood while you smack it with a "FBH" and there's less chance of destroying the Pan rails.
Be nice if someone made an LS style pan...

The scored tunnels are usually from either a dirty build or an oil filter in bypass, the crap gets caught by the babbit material and just gouges away at the soft tunnel :(

If he's interested and has his heart set of a Mk4 why would he look at a Mk3 no matter how good or what the deal is....
If it's going to be a Track Car only general and mechanical condition mean little as it's going to get knocked around and enigines don't last forever so chance are he'll be...
If there's no oil in it there's a chance when it's hot it's grinding itself into paste...
