All of those involve putting some money into the car, some a lot more then others. Taking out the shims if fee! But like you said, a royal PITA. He may want to refer to the "redneck bearing fix" thread to get a good idea of how big of a PITA it is ;).
Post, #4 refers to buying an amp to make the radio louder. Once you get enough "thump" you don't hear jack shit except for the "thump". Ask me how I know ;). You presume, or assume incorrectly, but, it's all gravy. I understand where you're coming from with the knucklehead comment ;).
Replace whichever section was toast (upper, longer section, or lower, shorter section) with a used one. Don't forget to fill it with speed cable lube or at least motor oil to extend it's life ;).
Maybe on cold startup, that's it. Do you think he can get away with an oil that's 0/10W-20? Are you sure there's not something preventing the oil from draining back into the block fast enough?

Depends on the brand, but there's not much difference in the price really if you plan on doing everything correctly and then look at how much you spent to do it that way ;).
^ LOL. Just as a good point of reference here to show some people on here how important the oil is as far as cooling the engine goes... Let's have a show of hands for those of use who would look at the oil temp gauge (if you installed it) more often than the water temp gauge ;).
:wavey...
