Just a guess, but it looks like the size of a Cold Start Injector Timer. I'm guessing as I see other Thermostat housing connectors missing in the picture. There is also some A/C related connections on the lower fender wall, but I can't remember what the connectors look like.

IMHO... I think you are barking up the wrong tree thinking that the Kenwood amp will make the 3.5 speakers sound better. Agree, backfire usually is an indicator of bad timing between spark (cps / distributer), crank and cam marks. When you tested for gas, did you dump some down the cylinders /TB that may have caused the backfire? Last dumb idea, your plug wires in the right places?:dunno:
