With a narrower tire, you have more pressure being exerted per square inch of rubber. This allows the sure to push down through the loose snow to the hard road below, or at the very least, compact the snow down.

I run some 205s on mine in the winter too, never had a problem. The supra has a few things going for it in the winter. First, it has an LSD, so you'll never have one wheel spinning. Second, it's FUCKING HEAVY. I drove in snow so deep my bumper was actually scooping it up. Never had a problem.
