So I'm driving home from work, I stop at a stop light. When it turns green I put it in first gear and all I get is grinding and my car is not moving. I throw it into second and I have no problems. All gears shift smoothly except first. Any ideas?

thrust washer?

If you have lost a gear the rest will soon follow as the little bits of metal in there begin to tear more stuff up. Rebuilt it or replace it soon. If you are N/A then finding a cheap w58 wont be very hard, the R154 is going to be a bit more money and a little harder to locate.

heavily worn shifter seat and socket, not to mention the rest of the tranny can cause that...
Actually, yeah, I had my shifter come loose, and pull up out of the tranny. Ended up cracking the bottom bushing in half, and wouldn't shift into 1st at all. Was a bitch. Pull the shifter out, and looks at the seat bushing, and the end bushing.

While you're looking at them, might as well replace them with solid urethane marlincrawler.com bushings :)
