Water temp gauge not working

Yeah so i have to fix it... and im wondering if this is a common problem on supra's? cause i know a lot of them have dashboard problems (mine especially).

my water temp sensor, tach, and oil pressure dont work. i need to get my temp sensor working so i have a few questions.

is there a common reason that mine isnt working? do i need a new coolant sensor? or did the gauge just go bad. because if possible, id like to have the stock one working rather than mounting on on my dash somewhere.

but if i do have to mount one on my dash, what i am understanding from searching on here is that i cannot run it right off the old coolant sensor, in other words, i cant take the wires from my current gauge and hook them up to my new gauge. this would cause a lot of problems correct?

so if i hook up an aftermarket gauge i would have to have a kit similar to this:

also, what is the difference between a mechanical and an electrical gauge?

thanks

Pull the connector off and ground out the end (koeo). It's the 1 wire sensor next to the ecu temp sensor on the side of the waterneck behind the thermostat housing. Have somebody watch the gauge while you do this. If the gauge moves then it is the senor that is bad.
The temp sensor needs to be on the engine side of the thermostat. The kit in the pic is for an electric fan controller.

alright thanks guys i will check this out then get back to you.

oh yeah, when i pull the connector off the sensor to check if it is bad or not, should the ignition be on or does it not matter? sorry for the noob questions.

Wow... what kind of kids do you know that makes you state the following?

That's untrue. Very untrue. If I were you, I'd go to your local college and take Automotive 101.

Edit: I'm not going to tell you what's likely the problem, but I'll point you in the right direction.

well from thread searches i found quite a few threads with "my tach/speedo/dashboard doesnt work" stuff. and my car had the dash replaced a few years ago, and i was guessing that was the reason... maybe not though.

anyhow, lol, im going to college right now for mechanical engineering:biglaugh: but it doesnt seem to be helping my car knowledge. i really have no background in cars (come from a family of wood workers lol) and my main interested was in motorcycles until my best friend was killed a few months ago, so i decided to move on to automobiles and now im doing my best to learn the ropes.

all that wiring diagram did for me was make my neck hurt haha. ill try to look at it again but like i said, this stuff is new to me.

and adampecush why do you reccoment an aftermarket gauge with such passion?

Shaeff - You mean that little thingy at the top of the diagram?

I rate this thread:

Study the wiring diagram carefully kids, spare yourself the embarrassment.

I'll give you an even bigger hint:

What do all 3 gauges have in common when studying said diagram?

haha! dangit! all my threads end up getting something like this! lol man i always feel like an idiot after posting oh here, but at least i get my answers.

so now i have to figure out where this fuse is located:3d_frown:

also from the diagram, i dont see anything about a water temp sensor on there? also it seems my turbo gauge is also hooked up to that fuse but that also works.... although it is laggy.

i checked the fusebox, pulled the fuse marked gauge 7.5a and it was not broken:3d_frown: guess its never that easy.
